Sankarimatkailijan opas Marinmaahan ja Udmurtiaan johdattaa alueiden historiaan ja nykypäivään niin valtiollisina muodostelmina kuin marin ja udmurtin kieltä puhuvien suomalaisten sukukansojen alueina. Esa-Jussi Salminen kertoo elävästi omakohtaisten kokemuksien kautta, kuinka sukukansojen venäläistäminen on ollut tietoista politiikkaa. Syventymällä niiden kielitilanteeseen ja poliittisiin kamppailuihin tarkastellaan samalla myös alueiden kirjallisuutta. Entistäkin ajankohtaisempien kieliasioiden lisäksi teos tutkii Marinmaata ja Udmurtiaa erikseen sekä opastaa maiden nähtävyyksiin, luontokohteisiin ja ajanviettotapoihin. Esa-Jussi Salminen on suomentaja, toimittaja ja sukukansa-asiantuntija, joka on työskennellyt vuosia opetustehtävissä Joshkar-Olassa, Kolozsvárissa ja Izhevskissä. Hän on suomentanut useita udmurttilaisen ja marilaisen kirjallisuuden teoksia.
